The management consultancy Kloepfel Consulting, which specializes in supply chains, surveyed German SMEs across all sectors from 31.10.2022 to 03.11.2022 to find out what they think about a possible corporate flight from Germany. A sample of 186 specialists and managers were surveyed online.
73 percent have corporate groups as major customers
73 percent of respondents have corporate groups as major customers. 27 percent of respondents said they did not.
Concerns about corporate exodus from Germany
Just under one in five of all respondents (19 percent) fears that corporations may flee Germany due to high energy prices, among other things. 65 percent think that corporations could partly migrate abroad due to high energy prices. 12 percent do not believe so and 4 percent cannot yet answer this question.
36 percent of companies with corporate customers would be severely affected
Looking at the 136 companies in the survey that supply corporate groups, 5 percent say they would have to close if major customers went abroad. Thirty-one percent say they would be severely affected but would not have to close. 53 percent of this group would be moderately affected. About one in ten (11 percent) feel they would not be affected if their major customers moved abroad.
Of those who do not have corporate customers, 29 percent would be moderately affected, 42 percent would not be affected and another 29 percent cannot currently answer this question.
32 percent are thinking about relocating production abroad
53 percent of SMEs with corporate customers are not planning to relocate production abroad. However, 21 percent with corporate customers are thinking about taking some of their production abroad. 11 percent are even considering moving their production completely abroad. And 15 percent are currently unable to answer this question.
71 percent of companies that do not have corporate groups as major customers are not planning to move abroad. Meanwhile, 29 percent are currently unable to answer this question.
58 percent give the current economic policy a poor to insufficient rating
8 percent give Germany’s current economic policy a grade of two. 19 percent rate the economic policy as satisfactory. 15 percent rate the current economic course as sufficient. 27 percent give it a poor and 31 percent insufficient.

It must be clear to the government that, in addition to short-term measures to contain the energy circles, long-term measures are needed today to strengthen our economy for the future: from a shortage of skilled workers to combating dependencies on autocratic states to a sustainable energy and raw materials policy.”
