Don’t let logistics prices overtake you now!
The Corona Lockdown is over for the time being – and with it the most profound restrictions on the logistics industry. The immediate effects are shown by the “Logistics Indicator” of the Leibniz Institute for Economic Research (ifo). On behalf of the Bundesvereinigung Logistik e. V. (BVL), these surveys the economic development in the logistics sector: In May, the main indicator was above the pre-crisis level at 102.5 points. This also means that German SMEs should act now to secure the best price conditions in the upturn.
Critical hurdle for SMEs: opaque logistics market
“We are only at the beginning of returning to a stable logistics market situation,” says Sebastian Krings, logistics expert and partner in the Kloepfel Group. “There are still transition pains, and these are manifested mainly by high freight utilization and rapid transport price increases.” A main problem here, he said, is a lack of market transparency for mid-sized entrepreneurs. “Of course, logistics companies are interested in boosting their prices now – SMEs would therefore do well to arm themselves and not be overtaken.”
Transparency with scarce resources
Most midsize companies, however, lack the resources to gain transparency. Many companies are in the process of recovering from the Corona shock and can’t assign staff to take care of it. “Truly in-depth market knowledge that allows an overview even in times of upheaval requires not only ongoing time investment, but also the right tools and expertise,” Krings said. “Providing support here is our core competence. Because this is the only way to reliably assess volatile developments and uncover and negotiate good price conditions with the right supplier.”
Safe travel – even on sight!
The current resurgence in incidence is also fueling doubts: are the days of lockdowns over? “It is important for a functioning pricing strategy to act agilely, especially under high pressure,” explains Krings. “Our logistics team has already proven to our customers that we regularly achieve double-digit percentage savings even in the current market environment – across all previous ‘corona phases.’ We secure capacity and attractive prices even when we have to go straight on sight with our customers.”
Stronger negotiation through expertise and synergies
To this end, Kloepfel Consulting relies on its 15 logistics experts with one to three specialists in each logistics field. According to Krings, the cross-customer bundling of purchasing volumes also offers a special opportunity for a stronger negotiating position. “We have over 40 logistics mandates per annum, which of course offers a different scope through synergies than if one customer negotiates its volume alone.”
