Many seaports are not using yet all the possibilities of digitalization. For example, loading and unloading is only carried out automatically at less than three percent of the world’s terminals. A large amount of data is generated at a port. Bringing it together and using it is very costly in organizational and technical terms. With the help of artificial intelligence (AI), this process could possibly be made easier in the future.<\/p>\n
For better use of the data and further automation of the work at the terminals, there is now an EU-funded research project called DataPorts. For this purpose, the University of Duisburg-Essen, the Ruhr Institute for Software Technology Paluno and other European partners have joined forces. The University of Valencia is the overall leader of this project.<\/p>\n
Specifically, DataPorts is concerned with the development of a Big Data platform that can be used to securely transfer data in ports. DataPorts provides the basis for numerous data-driven artificial intelligence applications. An example of such applications is the use of autonomous robots. In the future, completely new business models can be expected for ports.<\/p>\n
DataPorts are already being used in the ports of Valencia and Thessaloniki on a trial basis. For example, the system helps to forecast when a deep-sea container will reach a certain position in the logistics process. This enables optimization in the planning of the logistics chain.<\/p>\n
